BIGUMA®-Arctic Grade

BIGUMA®-Arctic Grade

Plastic-elastic bituminous joint sealant for cold climates

Description

Thanks to the special bitumen-polymer composition, BIGUMA®- Arctic Grade is designed for cold climates and is suitable for filling joints and cracks on concrete carriageways and other concrete and asphalt surfaces. This joint sealant meets the requirements for ductility and adhesiveness specified in the Technical delivery conditions for joint fillers (TL Fug-StB) even at temperatures of −30 °C.

Technical standards: TL Fug-StB

Advantages

  • Optimal ductility and adhesion, even at temperatures of −30 °C
  • Plastic-elastic formulation for an optimal balance between movement absorption and stress relaxation in joints

Available packaging

Carton: 24 kg, 12 kg
Metal containers: 30 kg, 10 kg

Application instructions

a) Melting

BIGUMA®- Arctic Grade must be heated indirectly and carefully to application temperature in a boiler with mechanical agitation, indirect heating and thermometer. The sealant temperature must be thermostatically controlled at all times. Overheating damages the polymers used for stabilisation and improvement and typically lowers the softening point (ring and ball).

b) Preparatory work

Joints must be blown out with high-pressure air or cleaned with a brushing machine. Separate cleaning from application to avoid contamination. Hot compressed-air lances may be used for drying or pre-heating.
Use primer COLZUMIX®- Haftgrund matched to BIGUMA®- Arctic Grade. The primer must form a complete film on the joint faces; apply about a 1 cm strip on both sides of the pavement. The primer binds dust on concrete and asphalt and forms an adhesive layer that fuses with the sealant.

c) Filling of the joints

Pre-treated joints should only be sealed in dry weather and at surface temperatures above +5 °C. The primer must be touch-dry; the joint must be dry and dust-free. Use suitable pouring equipment; the sealant must be at the specified temperature when poured. Too low a temperature reduces flow and can leave voids that later sink under traffic. Do not re-melt sealant that has already cooled. Shrinkage may require an immediate second pour. Avoid having to trim overfilled sealant, as removal can reduce adhesion to the joint faces.

Weather conditions

Prepared joints may only be sealed in dry weather and at a surface temperature of at least 0 °C.

Material consumption

BIGUMA®- Arctic Grade: joint length (cm) × joint width (cm) × joint depth (cm) × specific gravity of sealant (g/cm³) = consumption (g).
Primer: COLZUMIX®- Haftgrund approx. 3 % of the sealant quantity required.

Cleaning agents

Equipment: BIGUMA®- SWS, petrol and commercial solvents
Skin contact: hand washing paste

Storage

Store cool and dry; shelf life at least 24 months.
