BIGUMA®-Asphalt

BIGUMA®-Asphalt

Polymer-modified, bituminous joint sealant for road surfaces made from asphalt

Description

BIGUMA®- Asphalt has been specially designed for use on asphalt surfaces. The excellent flow properties of the sealant ensure a high working speed and proper filling of the joint space. When joints and cracks on asphalt surfaces are treated with hot air distribution devices, no additional priming is required, as a bitumen film is already formed which acts as a primer.

Approvals: TL Fug-StB, DIN EN 14188-1, type N2

Advantages

  • Rheologically optimised to the requirements and geometry of asphalt joints
  • Plastic-elastic formulation for an optimal balance between movement absorption and stress relaxation in joints
  • Excellent adhesion to bituminous substrates
  • Optimised stability and drive-over resistance
  • Excellent performance properties at hot and cold temperatures
  • High ageing-resistance of joint

Available packaging

Carton: 22 kg, 13 kg
Metal containers: 32 kg

Technical info

Application instructions

a) Melting

Heat BIGUMA®-Asphalt carefully to 160–180 °C in a boiler with mechanical agitation, indirect heating and a thermometer. Regulate temperature thermostatically at all times. Avoid overheating—this damages polymers and reduces guaranteed properties. Mono-material processing is required to maintain warranted casting compound properties.

b) Filling of the joints

Joint flanks must be clean, dust-free, dry and free of separable substances. Blow out asphalt joints with compressed air as needed, keeping cleaning and casting work spatially separated. Pressurised hot air may be used for artificial drying or heating.
Where required, use COLZUMIX®-Haftgrund primer designed for this material to bind dust on asphalt and form an adhesive layer that fuses with the sealant. See the primer TDS for details. For bonding to cast steel fixtures or kerbs, a COLZUMIX®-Haftgrund undercoat is generally recommended.
BIGUMA®-Asphalt may be cast mechanically with a lance or by hand from a pot. The sealant must be at the stated application temperature when poured. If pouring temperature is too low, flow suffers and joints may not fill completely, risking voids and sagging under traffic.
Joint width should be at least 10 mm for longitudinal and transverse joints. Longitudinal joints should not run in wheel paths or in lane marking zones. Cooling may cause shrinkage; a second pour may be needed immediately after the first. BIGUMA®-Asphalt must not be applied via spray bars.

c) Hot splice adhesive

Apply BIGUMA®-Asphalt mechanically with a casting lance, fully coating the seam flank. Applied quantity depends on the asphalt layer type—avoid overdosing to prevent local excess binder and surface contamination, especially on wearing courses. Hot mix may be placed shortly after seam treatment once the binder has cooled; the mix fuses with the seam adhesive for a strong layer bond.
Seam surfaces must be largely dry, clean, frost-free, oil- and grease-free, with loose material removed. Aim for a uniform, slightly bevelled profile when placing the first layer (e.g. bevelled edge form and edge roller). If not, trim the still-hot layer to a straight bevel before treatment.

d) Crack restoration

Blow out existing cracks with a pressurised hot air lance (crack-covering, HPS) or roughen in advance. Remove foreign material and loose parts. The lance heats asphalt at crack flanks and activates bitumen. COLZUMIX®-Haftgrund may be used as primer if needed.
In crack-covering and milling–casting procedures, apply BIGUMA®-Asphalt with a screed box; width follows the crack path. Runny compound at application temperature flows into the crack and bonds the flanks. Material remaining on the surface overlaps the crack to protect edges and prevent debonding. Application thickness is about 2–3 mm. For grip and appearance, broadcast and roll in pre-bituminised, double-crushed and screened chips/sand (1/3 mm) while the sealant is still hot.

Weather conditions

Pre-treated joints, cracks and seams may be cast only in dry weather with component temperature above 0 °C. Surface temperature must be at least 3 °C above dew point when placing BIGUMA®-Asphalt.

Material consumption

BIGUMA®-Asphalt: joint length (cm) × joint width (cm) × joint depth (cm) × sealant density (g/cm³) = consumption (g).
Optional primer: COLZUMIX®-Haftgrund approx. 3 % of sealant quantity required.

Cleaning agents

Equipment: BIGUMA®-SWS
At skin contact: hand washing paste

Storage

Store cold and dry; storable for at least 24 months.
