BIGUMA®-Airfield

Polymer-modified, bituminous joint sealant for air road surfaces with increased joint movement

Description

BIGUMA®-Airfield joint sealant has been specially developed for concrete road surfaces at aerodromes. With a movement absorption factor of 35 %, joints sealed with BIGUMA®-Airfield can easily withstand the heavy strain from departing and landing aircraft. In addition, this special joint sealant is characterised by its excellent performance properties at hot and cold temperatures and its good adhesion to mineral and bituminous substrates.

Technical standards: TL Fug-StB, DIN EN 14188-1, Type N2

Advantages

  • Designed for a potential change in joint gap width of up to 35 %
  • Plastic-elastic formulation for an optimal balance between movement absorption and stress relaxation in joints
  • Excellent performance properties at hot and cold temperatures
  • Good adhesion to bituminous and mineral substrates
  • High ageing-resistance of the joint
  • Resistant to aqueous solutions, salts, diluted acids and similar media
  • Bituminous building material — easy to recycle

Available packaging

Carton: 24 kg, 12 kg. Metal containers: 30 kg.

Application instructions

a) Melting

Heat BIGUMA®-Airfield carefully to the application temperature of 160–180 °C in a boiler with mechanical agitation, indirect heating and a thermometer. The temperature must be thermostatically regulated and controllable at all times. Avoid overheating — it damages the polymers and causes loss of guaranteed properties.

b) Requirements to the subsoil

Blow concrete and asphalt joints thoroughly with high-pressure air or clean with a brushing machine; keep cleaning and application work strictly separate. Hot compressed-air lances may be used for artificial drying or pre-heating of joints. Primer COLZUMIX®-Airfield must be used — it binds dust on the substrate and forms an adhesive layer that fuses with the sealant. The primer must cover the joint flanks completely as a film; apply a strip approx. 1 cm wide on both sides. Before filling, the primer must be fully dried (touch-dry) and the joint dust-free.

c) Filling of the joints

Apply BIGUMA®-Airfield by hand pour or mechanically via an application lance. The sealant must have reached the specified application temperature; pouring at too low a temperature reduces flowability and may leave voids, which can cause sinking under rolling traffic. A bedding material may be needed to set the sealant height, prevent leakage into sub-voids, and avoid three-flank bonding (which can cause sealant failure under stress). Allow for possible shrinkage on cooling; a second pour immediately after the first may be required. Material must be poured under flushing.

Weather conditions

Prepared joints may only be sealed in dry weather and at a surface temperature of at least 0 °C.

Material consumption

BIGUMA®-Airfield: joint length (cm) × joint width (cm) × joint depth (cm) × specific gravity (g/cm³) = consumption (g). Primer COLZUMIX®-Airfield: approx. 3 % of the sealant quantity required.

Cleaning agents

Equipment: petrol or common solvents. Skin contact: hand cleansing paste.

Storage

Store cool and dry; shelf life at least 24 months.
