DOBAU®-2KS

DOBAU®-2KS

Two-component bituminous thick coating based on a polymer-modified bitumen emulsion (PMBC), solvent-free

Description

DOBAU®-2KS is a two-component, polymer-modified thick bitumen coating in the form of a thixotropic paste. It is used to create lasting external seals in structures to protect against soil moisture and non-pressing water on floor slabs and building components in contact with the ground.

In addition, DOBAU®-2KS can be used to protect against the moderate effects of pressing water, non-pressing water on underground ceilings, splash water on wall bases and capillary water in and under construction components in contact with the ground. This thick bitumen coating has also proven itself at bonding hard foam insulation panels to areas in contact with the ground.

Advantages

  • high processing precision thanks to targeted chemical reaction of the two components
  • fast drying
  • seamless, flexible seal with crack-bridging properties
  • high heat resistance
  • highly flexible and elastic, even at cold temperatures
  • high ageing-resistance
  • easy to handle, even on moist substrates
  • solvent-free and environmentally friendly
  • complies with EN 15814 PMBC-W2A, CB2, C2A, R2
  • suitable for W1.1-E, W1.2-E, W3-E, W4-E seal types in accordance with DIN 18533-3

Application instructions

Requirements to the subsoil

Building areas onto which DOBAU®-2KS is to be applied must be firm, smooth, free of nests, gaping cracks and burrs as well as free of impurities. Unclosed recesses larger than 5 mm, such as mortar pockets, open butt and horizontal joints or outbreaks, must be closed with suitable mortar. Masonry surfaces according to DIN 1053-1, open butt joints to 5 mm and surface profiles or uneven areas of stones must be closed or equalised either by plastering (thin or levelling plaster), sealing slurry or by scratch filling with DOBAU®-2KS. If the effects of water from the negative side, i.e. from the building structure, are to be expected during the construction phase, the substrate must be treated with a mineral sealing slurry (MDS).

Establishing the seal

For better bonding with the substrate, it is necessary to use the primer DOBAU®-Voranstrich E (solvent-free). For processing, the bitumen emulsion (component A) is first stirred briefly in the container using a slow running electric agitator together with an anchor stirrer. The reaction component (component B) is stirred in. Both components are mixed intensively with the agitator until a homogenous, knot-free compound results; mixing time approx. 2–3 minutes depending on agitator type. The material should be applied like plaster onto the treated substrate. The processing time of the finished thick coating is about 1 hour at a material temperature of 20 °C. DOBAU®-2KS is applied in minimum two layers with or without reinforcement inlay, e.g. with a trowel, spatula, smoother or similar. When sealing against the "moderate effect of pressing water" (W2.1-E) and "non-pressing water on earth-covered ceilings" (W3-E), a reinforcement inlay must be laid after the first work step. The first sealing layer must have dried through so that it is not damaged by the work that follows. Inner corners and wall/floor connections must be formed as hollow or sealing fillets (maximum radius 20 mm). In the area of floor/wall connections with protruding floor slab, DOBAU®-2KS must be routed down from the wall area via the floor slab to about 100 mm on the face of the floor slab. Spread out to zero when interrupting work; resume with overlapping. Work interruptions must not be made on building corners, fillets or edges. Moisten tools before use and clean with water immediately afterwards.

Detail formation

The relevant regulations of DIN 18533 Part 3 must be observed for the necessary detail formations, connections to a cross sectional seal, transition to a WU concrete structure, wall base, penetrations as well as expansion joints, in relation to the water penetration class.

Protective layers / insulating layer

Building structures must be provided with an additional protective layer in accordance with DIN 18533. The protective layer may only be applied after the seal has sufficiently dried. Protective layers can be bonded point-by-point with a PMBC (approx. 1–2 kg/m²). Materials that could damage the PMBC must not be used in the area in contact with the ground. Expanded or extruded polystyrene hard foam boards, dimpled membranes with sliding layer or foam glass boards are suitable. If perimeter insulation boards are used, these can be bonded to the sealing layer over the full area with DOBAU®-2KS (consumption: 3–4 kg/m² depending on evenness).

Processing checks

According to DIN 18533-3, the wet layer thickness must be inspected regularly during application. Measuring points should be distributed diagonally (at least 20 measurements per object or per 100 m²). Each layer must be inspected separately. Resultant dry layer thicknesses can only be tested destructively. For W2.1-E, layer thickness checks (number, location, result), material consumption per reference area and through-drying inspection results must be documented.

Weather conditions

At the application of DOBAU®-2KS the ground and air temperatures must be more than 5 °C. The effects of water, rain and frost must be avoided during the processing and drying phase.

Material consumption

Apply in minimum 2 layers. Minimum dry layer thickness: 3 mm (4 mm with glass net fabric inlay); wet layer thickness (incl. 25 % allowance per DIN 18533): approx. 4.0 mm for W4-E, W1.1-E, W1.2-E; approx. 5.5 mm for W2.1-E and W3-E. For bonding perimeter insulation boards: 3–4 kg/m².

Cleaning agents

When fresh: water
When set: DOBAU®-SWS Bitumenreiniger, common solvents or benzine; at skin contact hand washing paste

Storage

The PMBC can be stored for at least 12 months in the unopened container. The containers must be kept away from frost. Avoid direct sunlight or strong heat.
